Interview with Stacey B Street
Raud Fine Art Gallery, Chicago
RFA Gallery: Stacey, welcome. Can you tell us a little about what inspires your work?
Stacey: Thank you! For me, inspiration is everywhere in Chicago — the skyline, the river, even the quiet corners of my Pilsen neighborhood. I’ve always been drawn to the rhythm of city life, how light plays across the architecture, and how a simple street scene can carry so much emotion.
RFA Gallery: Much of your work focuses on cityscapes and skylines. What draws you to those subjects?
Stacey: Cityscapes are alive — they’re never the same twice. The way the morning sun hits the State Street Bridge or how the skyline glows after a rainstorm… those are moments I want to hold onto. Painting them is my way of capturing both the structure and the feeling of the city.
RFA Gallery: Your work was recently featured in the TV series Dark Matter. How was that experience?
Stacey: It was amazing! They included pieces from my Rooftop Skyline Series, along with my large painting State Street Bridge and Duck, Duck. Seeing my work in that new context was really exciting — it showed me how art can shape not just homes and galleries, but stories on screen too.
RFA Gallery: What do you hope people feel when they see your work?
Stacey: Joy, connection, maybe even nostalgia. Whether it’s a big Chicago skyline or a smaller, more intimate piece, I want my art to remind people of the beauty around them — in both the city and in everyday life.
RFA Gallery: And what’s next for you?
Stacey: I’m continuing to build my cityscape series, and I’m also exploring new sculpture ideas. At the same time, I’m excited about collaborations — whether exhibitions, commissions, or even more work for film and TV. It feels like the city is always giving me something new to paint.
