Some Pictures Deserve More Than a Frame: The Journey of a Commission

Some photographs deserve more than a frame.

Commission work is different.
It isn't a 'what should I paint today?' kind of day. It starts with you. 

Usually it begins with a photograph that means something. A trip to Colorado. A Christmas Eve dinner. A portrait of the people you love most. Sometimes it’s a moment that felt ordinary at the time — but now you realize it wasn’t. Many people commission a custom oil painting from a photograph when they want to turn an important memory into something lasting.

That’s what I paint. 

We’ll start by choosing the size. Where it will live. How you want it to feel in your space. We’ll go over the details — what should stay true to the original moment, what can be softened, and what you’d like to be the focal point. 

If it’s a portrait, I’ll tell you honestly: faces take time. Especially when they’re small. Capturing a likeness isn’t just copying a photo. It’s studying light, shadow, structure, and  expression, and building it carefully in paint. The more faces included, the more time and precision the painting requires. That’s why portrait commissions include an added portrait surcharge. It reflects the added work needed to capture each likeness well. 

Once we’ve chosen the reference image and size, I begin. 

I prepare the canvas and start with an underpainting to establish values. From there, the piece develops in layers. I mix colors intentionally — not just to match the photograph, but to make it the painting feel alive. Sometimes a painting calls for something specific. I once had to go find the thinnest brush I’ve ever used because nothing else could handle the detail the painting demanded. 

I go the extra mile. Always. 

The process is slow and layered. It builds over time with attention in every stage — because this isn’t “just another painting.” It’s your memory. 

When the painting is finished, I varnish it, which helps protect it from dust and everyday handling, and it can reduce the impact of UV exposure. It also unifies the finish and brings out the depth of the colors, giving the painting that final, finished richness. 

Then it’s carefully packed and shipped to you.
